About the stone
Amethyst
A purple quartz coloured by traces of iron. Hardness 7.
In tradition: The name comes from the Greek "amethystos", meaning "not intoxicated". Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
Care: Keep out of long, strong sunlight, which can fade the purple; wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Quartz
One of the most common minerals on Earth: a hard, glassy crystal of silica. Hardness 7.
In tradition: Clear quartz was once thought, in ancient Greece, to be ice that would never melt; the word "crystal" comes from the Greek for ice.
