About the stone
Dragon vein agate
An agate with a network of fine cracks (crackle) that are often coloured to bring out the pattern. Hardness 6.5–7.
In tradition: Its web of veins gives this agate its name, a reference to the scales of a dragon.
Care: Wipe with a soft dry cloth; avoid soaking, as the colour in the veins can fade.
Agate
A banded variety of chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. Each agate forms slowly, layer by layer, inside cavities in rock, so no two patterns are the same. Hardness 6.5–7.
In tradition: Agate has been carved into seals, beads and amulets since ancient times. Khambhat (Cambay) in Gujarat has been a centre of agate bead making for thousands of years.
Care: Wipe with a soft dry cloth; keep away from perfume and harsh cleaners.
