About the stone
Jasper
An opaque, fine-grained quartz coloured by minerals such as iron, in reds, browns, yellows and greens. Every piece has its own pattern. Hardness 6.5–7.
In tradition: The name comes from the Greek "iaspis". Jasper was widely used for seals and amulets in the ancient world.
Care: Wipe with a soft dry cloth; keep away from perfume and harsh cleaners.
Jade
"Jade" covers two tough stones, nephrite and jadeite, valued for their smooth, waxy lustre. Hardness 6–7.
In tradition: In China jade has been revered for thousands of years as the stone of virtue. In New Zealand, Maori greenstone (pounamu) is a treasured taonga.
Care: Very tough but can scratch: wipe with a soft cloth and store separately.
